On the 7th May 2025, the Design Technology department's Greenpower Racing team visited Mallory Park for their first heat of the season with both electric cars. The seniors had a lot to live up to as they were given the very difficult job of upholding a 100% heat and final victory, along with a world title from last season. The juniors, a mix of old hands and new starters, were on hand to see if a top five finish was again attainable after an off season of rebuilding.
Both cars made it easily through scrutineering, a time where they always hold their breath in anticipation of an MOT failure, but as always, passed with flying colours.
Race one saw the juniors take to the circuit and, after a stoppage on the first bend when two schools collided, the race started again. Unfortunately, nine miles in and after the first pit change, a mistake was made by the second driver which caused another accident. A black flag was given to our team. However, the car was severely damaged and had to stay in after the crash and couldn’t return to the track.
Race two saw the seniors take 'The Egg' out for its first run of the season, and with only a one-hour race and limited testing, the team went on a tentative couple of laps. The car was monitored well with the team communicating with the driver about where second place was in relation to Bromsgrove and helping her to adjust the throttle usage to keep second place at bay. This proved successful as the team cruised to yet another win, keeping that 100% record alive from last season and driving nine seconds faster per lap (and better than last year’s team).
Race three saw a wounded yet fixed 'Team Chicken' car hit the racetrack in enthusiastic fashion. This time, the race went as expected and even after a near offing, which saw them lose thirty seconds, the team raced very well and came in a very respectable fifth place. The drivers drove and pitted very well and should be commended on their attitude, enthusiasm and willingness to get the car ready for this race.
